My Second Visit

Second Visit

I visited the Yale Art Gallery for my second visit. I decided to visit the Asian Art exhibition with a friend of mine, and we made a nice afternoon of it, grabbing an early dinner afterwards. It was actually her first time visiting and she loved it! The funniest part was she thought it was one floor until I directed her over to the elevator and her face lit up. After deciding between two exhibits, I did settle on the Asian Art exhibit because I was peeking in during my last visit. While there was many pieces I absolutely loved, my favorite was a porcelain bowl with a design of a couple: A Bowl with a Couple.

The Yale Art Gallery is noted as the oldest art museum in the western hemisphere. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, it was found in 1832 by John Trumbull. In 1832, he sold 60 mini portraits and 28 paintings to Yale, and designed the Neoclassical building we know as the Yale Art Gallery.

My general opinion of the exhibit was that I loved it. There was such a variety in mediums. From the bowls, vases, textile work, and clothing items, I enjoyed nearly every piece I saw.

As I mentioned before, my favorite piece I saw was titled Bowl with a Couple. I really enjoyed all the pottery I saw. I've taken ceramics 5 times, so I love seeing such beautiful pieces of pottery and seeing how artists once executed said works. Unfortunately, the artist of this piece remains unknown but here are a few facts about the work: Made in the early 13th century, Stonepaste with luster on a white glaze, Measures at 8 3/16 in., Comes from the Iranian/Persian culture.

Bowl with a Couple by Unknown (early 13th century)

Due to the artist being unknown, I'm unable give more background on the piece and what pieces the artist may have made before and afterwards.

All in all, I had a nice second experience at the Yale Art Gallery being able to look at the art, spend time with a friend, and grab food afterwards. I'm much looking forward to my next visit.

  1. Love the first Buddha photograph. The collection of Asian objects is quite nice. The 13th century bowl seeps to be a highfire clay with a glaze. This is noteworthy in itself as it would be 600 years or so before the western potters could achieve this temperature and level of durability. The technology to reach stoneware temperatures was still out of reach. One nice thing about this space is the feeling of quiet peacefulness as not as many people visit here.
